Sourcing Los Angeles Culture

Street Food Cinema Scares and Delights With Boo-ze Bites & Frights

As we navigate Halloween season in Los Angeles, it’s easy to be reminded that we live in one of the best cities in the world for watching movies. You can catch a screening at one of the city’s many repertory theatres, enjoy a blockbuster at AMC or check out an outdoor movie screening at spots like the beach or a rooftop in DTLA. An absolute gem of 2024’s Halloween season is Boo-ze Bites and Frights, a pop up outdoor movie event at Heritage Square Museum run by Street Food Cinema.

One of the best parts of the entire experience, hands down, is the location – as a guest, it feels like a deeply unique experience to be traversing the grounds of Heritage Square at night, surrounded by old, Victorian homes that each hold decades of stories. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect for a spooky movie screening and feels like one of the best ways to soak in Halloween season.

The area has two screens set up to enjoy your double feature. You’ll want to pick your seats and start exploring right as you arrive, because there’s plenty to do. Trick or treat among the houses and collect an assortment of treats in a collectible bag given to you upon your arrival. These aren’t small treats either, as we were given bottles of Coke Zero, Vitamin Water, bags of Smart Sweets and lots more to enjoy during the film. While you’re at it, feel free to take a tour through several of the homes and learn some of their rich history!

You’ll also want to stop by one of their three separate bars, one of which exists in a beautiful old church with stained glass windows – the same building where you can enjoy a Q&A from the filmmakers before the movie starts. Grab food from one of the food trucks or tents with spots like Angeleno’s Wood Fire Pizza, Locke Downe BBQ, District Burger and more ready to serve you. Go shopping through some of the various vendors. Visit a psychic. Take your photo with Jason or on a rotating photo booth. Make sure you get there right when the doors open because you’ll want to spend every moment soaking in the environment when the movies aren’t playing!

Overall, we were extremely impressed by what Street Food Cinema put together, and highly anticipate their return to Heritage Square! Make sure to come in costume as there is a costume contest between the two films!

Boo-ze Bites & Frights runs October 11, 12, 18 & 19. The movie schedule is as follows:

October 11: Paranormal Activity & The Ring
October 12: From Dusk Till Dawn & The Faculty
