Jason Bentley of KCRW hosted Jamie xx at Sonos Studios on a particularly beautiful Monday August evening. Jamie xx is well known in his role of electro band The xx, but has grown as a solo act. It was my first visit to Sonos Studios and I felt welcomed into a community of music lovers alike.
The intimate space is acoustically designed and acts as a shared gallery space to the public. On evenings when there aren’t private events, Sonos Studios welcomes everyone to come play their own music through the Sonos Wireless HiFi System.
Jamie xx started promptly at 7:00, with no laptop in sight, and spun vinyl records for his hour-long set. All records were spun with a very “Jamie xx feel” where I felt as if I were on a tropical island dancing to electro funk beats. About 20 minutes into his set, I got slightly worried when I had yet to hear any original music of his own until I heard Sleep Sound so brilliantly mixed into Brandy’s That Boy is Mine.
This was my fifth time in the presence of Jamie xx; a few times as part of The xx and caught his solo act at Coachella this past year. While each experience has been amazing and different in their own right, my evening at Sonos Studios felt as if I were hanging out in Jamie’s living room and he was spinning records for my friends and I to dance to-with an open-bar, respectively.
With an incredible sound system and collaborative space, this definitely won’t be my last trip to Sonos.
