Mami Wata Opens America’s First African Surf Shop in Venice Beach Hosted by Selema Masekela

Global African surf lifestyle brand, Mami Wata and co-founder Selema Masekela hosted an exclusive launch event to unveil America’s first African surf shop in Venice, CA. The action sport, surf, fashion, and SoCal community came out to Venice to celebrate and show their support for Mami Wata. Mami Wata is a premium African surf lifestyle brand with a mission to be a creative force for good on the African continent. Founded in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2017, the brand manufactures its full range of apparel, accessories, and surfboards in Africa. Named after the African water spirit Mami Wata, the name “Mami Wata” is West African pidgin English meaning ‘Mama Water’.

Attendees took a moment to hear more about the brand changing the narrative around surf culture and received a sneak peek at the brand’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection, and were among the first to view Mami Wata’s latest short film, Luck is Alive. Guests in attendance enjoyed sounds by DJ Gazelle and DJ Brick, and beverages and libations from Solento Organic Tequila, Lubanzi Wines, Boxed Water, Firestone Walker Brewing Company, and Taika Canned Beverages.
