Lady Gaga Honored with the Jane Ortner Artist Award at the Grammy Museum Award Luncheon

Six-time Grammy Award winner Lady Gaga was the recipient of the Jane Ortner Artist Award in recognition of her dedication to education through the arts at the Grammy Museum Award Luncheon on April 4th at Ron Burkle’s Green Acres home in Beverly Hills, California. Jonathan Bernal, an eighth grade English teacher from Topaz Preparatory Academy in Hesperia, CA, was the recipient of the Jane Ortner Education Award.

During her acceptance speech, Lady Gaga thanked her early piano instructors and longtime vocal coach Don Lawrence, and expressed her gratitude for growing up with a strong foundation in music education. “At the end of the day, it’s my love of learning music and playing music that keeps me here,” said Lady Gaga.

The event also featured a special performance from Grammy winner John Legend, the first-ever recipient of the Jane Ortner Artist Award, whose set included a cover of The Beatles’ Here Comes The Sun and his Grammy-winning song Ordinary People, among others. Lady Gaga was backed by her jazz quintet for a special performance that included covers of Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York and Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose.

All Proceeds from the 2016 Jane Ortner Education Award Luncheon benefitted the expansion of the Museum’s Jane Ortner Education Award program, which offers professional development for teachers and a free online library of music-integrated curricula.
