Noisey and ACE Hotel Present: The Reflektor Tapes

It was a dreamy Monday evening as the sky turned to pink cotton candy hues and I walked into The Theatre at ACE hotel. Arcade Fire’s first feature film, The Reflektor Tapes, has finally made it’s way to the US and was premiered at The Theatre at ACE Hotel in partnership with Noisey.

The documentary directed by Kahlil Joseph, chronicles the band’s creative process, which includes a trip to Haiti and Jamaica, as well as live show footage from their Reflektor tour. I’m no film critic, but the documentary seemed to lack direction and left me slightly confused, yet intrigued by the beautiful cinematography and overlapping sounds.

The film was presented by Win Butler and Regine Chassagne, while Joseph was mysteriously missing. Butler read a passage from Charles Bukowski before they rolled the film. “If it doesn’t come bursting out of you in spite of everything, don’t do it. “Unless it comes unasked out of your heart and your mind and you your mouth and your gut, don’t do it”. It was interesting to have that in my mind as I watched the band’s journey of creativity and exploration as they wrote Reflektor Tapes and performed it in large arenas.

A Q&A with Win and Chassagne after the film gave me a closer look to see who these artists truly are. If you’ve ever seen Arcade Fire live, you know their shows are wild, they are a rock band after all. However, both seem so humble, funny, and real as they answered countless questions from the audience.

While the film itself felt disorganized, the Q&A afterwards gave greater insight as of why they decided to make the documentary in the first place. If you’re an Arcade Fire fan, then Reflektor Tapes might give you an interesting perspective on the album’s journey.
