Whether you’ve just moved to Los Angeles or you’ve been in the city for a while, but you need a change of pace, it’s definitely tough to meet new people. That’s a fact of living in LA, but there are relatively simple things you can do to meet new, interesting people that you click with.
1. Play Fantasy Football
If you’re interested in football, a good way to meet people in LA is to join a league. You come together and talk about everything, including your Fantasy Football rankings, and you may end up finding people to spend time with the outside of the football season as well. You have events to look forward to throughout the year if you can find a league as well, like the draft.
2. Go to the Dog Park
People in Los Angeles tend to gather at dog parks, and it can be a great place to socialize. If you already have a dog, perfect. If not, you might consider getting one, and not just so you can meet people at the dog park.
When you have a dog, it tends to get you out and about more in general, and this creates different opportunities to meet people. For example, you have to walk your dog, so maybe you get the chance to meet people who live in your neighborhood. You might take your dog to pet-friendly cafes, which, again, is a chance to meet people. Going to the groomers and the pet shop, again, you guessed it, is a chance to meet people.
3. Work Out
Los Angeles is known for having residents who love to stay fit, so it makes sense that you could potentially meet new friends at the gym or a workout class. The gym can be a little tougher because you don’t necessarily want to go up to strangers and try to start a conversation when they’re working out.
Classes are ideal because there’s a sense of community, and a lot of people go to the same classes every week, so you get the chance to spend time with people on a longer-term basis. If you’re new to group workout classes, you might want to try something like ClassPass. You can buy credits and try out a wide variety of fitness classes that participate in the program until you find something you like.
4. Take A Class
Taking a class is a good way to not just meet people but build your skillset. You might find that you advance your career when you take a class, along with meeting people who have similar interests to you. Taking a class could include an acting or comedy class, a class related to technology, or maybe a class centered around the arts. Cooking classes are also a good chance to talk to people and maybe get to know them.
5. Go To Trivia
A lot of bars, pubs, and restaurants around the LA area will host theme nights, including trivia nights. These are perfect opportunities to meet people. Everyone’s already in a cheerful mood, and you can get a chance to be lighthearted and maybe find a group of people you end up going to trivia with once a week. If you’re not a big trivia person, find a happy hour you can go to weekly. The more consistent you can stay, the easier it will be to gradually start to get to know people. Try to find something where the same general group of people is likely to go every week so that a friendship unfolds a little more organically.
6. Get to Know Your Neighbors
Don’t discount the fact that your neighbors might end up becoming your closest friends, especially if you live in an apartment building. Use the common areas, like a public rooftop, if you have one, or if you run into someone regularly in the hallway, say hi.
7. Try Meetup
Finally, Meetup is a site where people can organize events with other people who have similar interests. For example, you might organize a meetup around liking a sports team or just for a social group. Many times, they’re built around a shared hobby, like cycling, for example. When you create an account, you can find groups that interest you, or you can create your own. Meetup goes back to 2022, and now there are nearly 30 million members and hundreds of thousands of groups. There’s also an app so you can organize meetups easily on the go.
