Ancient Mayan Civilization Resurfaces at Escape Room L.A.

After adding yet another epic adventure to its roster, Escape Room L.A. held an exclusive media preview for their newest room The Pyramid. Designed by mastermind John Hennessy, The Pyramid takes players into ancient Mayan civilization. Reflective of the secrets and rituals from the historic period, the room allows participants to journey through a series of challenges involving Aztec calendars, battling elements, and fighting indigenous creatures in order to return to today’s uncivilized world.

Upon entering, we were met by John who gave us a brief synopsis of the room and its minimal number of features waiting to be added before opening to the public. He informed us that the room was estimated to be completed within an hour before warning that The Pyramid was the organization’s most challenging room to date.

Our mission: summoned to save a Mayan civilization, we collectively had to work as a group to restore the mask of the jade warrior.

The mission seemed easy in retrospect, but we were a bunch of strangers placed together to solve one major issue. Would we be able to band together to solve the many puzzles lying around the room peacefully? We did. The room’s intricacy allowed for us to break into smaller groups to solve its various parts. Going from one part of the room to the next, opening up secret passageways, and crawling through unchartered territories we came out victorious. I’d rate our team working skills a 9 on a scale of 1-10. Each puzzle solved brought us a sense of glory, leading us closer and closer to locating the warrior’s mask.

Completing the room with 41 seconds remaining we burst through the exit with grace and applause.

The set of the game was designed by Jeff McLaughlin, who has won numerous LA Drama Critic Circle Awards and LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards, accompanied by Industrial Designer Mazin Dajani and Construction Coordinator Kyle Rettinger.

Located in Downtown LA, Escape Room L.A. has brought together over 25,000 people solving over 70 games per week.
