Spandau Ballet’s “Soul Boys of the Western World” Los Angeles Premiere @ Sundance Cinemas

After premiering at SXSW this March, Soul Boys of the Western World finally headed to Los Angeles on April 4th for its premiere at Sundance Cinemas off of Sunset Blvd. The movie is a live glimpse through Spandau’s Ballet’s journey as friends and bandmates starting off in the UK, where five British boys decided to make a pop band.

Soul Boys of the Western World is not your typical rockstar storyline with a downfall of drugs and woman. Gary Kemp, the songwriter of the group, says “there is a fourth reason that makes a band fall apart: ego.” Gary’s ego did just that by wanting to gain ownership of all of Spandau Ballet’s music and forgetting why the band got started in the first place. Director George Hencken went about the bands break up and reunion in a more than realistic way by using old footage of Spandau Ballet (mostly from their shows and interviews) throughout the whole movie.

The director and three members of Spandau Ballet came out after the movie for a Q&A session, where their rivalry with Duran Duran was the main topic of the evening. The band, which consists of five charismatic handsome British fellows, are now reunited and touring all over the world. If you want to take a trip through London in the 1980s, I would highly suggest watching Soul Boys of the Western World.
