Sourcing Los Angeles Culture

Sundance NEXT FEST is a New Breed of Cultural Adventures

The 3 day festival that is Sundance Next Fest has officially touched down in Downtown Los Angeles at the historic Theatre at the Ace Hotel. Sundance Next Fest is ahead of the curb by combining various cultural instances into one show. John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “Los Angeles is home to a huge audience of people on the cutting edge of what’s new and next in film and music. Our Sundance NEXT FEST was born as an experiment to showcase this and offer LA audiences a slice of Sundance in the summer.”

The festival officially started on August 7th, 2015 with the premiere of Mistress America followed with a live performance by Sky Ferreira. The Ace Theatre itself displays a plethora of artistic power through its impressive architecture. To start of the show, writer/director Noah Baumbach, actresses Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke took the stage. Mistress America demonstrates a theatrical feel sprinkled with a European style, which focuses on conversations between characters. Afterwards, California sweetheart, Sky Ferreira played a special music performance that embodied a shared artistic sensibility with the movie.

Virtual reality, long featured in the New Frontier exhibition at the Sundance Film Festival, now joins Sundance NEXT FEST with Max Rheiner’s Oculus Rift-based virtual reality installation Birdly. Birdly simulates the experience of being a bird from a first-person perspective through a full-body virtual reality setup. All attendees can experience this installation, which will be located at The Theatre at Ace Hotel Mezzanine, at no additional cost through an onsite waitlist system.

Sundance Next Fest understands our millennial need by combining various ways to experience our evolving culture through conversations, movies, and music.
