Festival fashion, live music performances, food trucks, and merchandise stands—one can presume that all these elements would encapsulate a music festival of some sort. But instead, on Wednesday, February 8th, three thousand people flocked to Venice Beach, California to attend the most talked about LA fashion event of the season: Tommy Hilfiger’s Spring 2017 Fashion show. For his spring collection, the American designer moved his runway show from New York City to Los Angeles. Previously transformed NYC’s Pier 16 into a carnival fair called “Tommy Pier” for the fall 2016 collection, Hilfiger’s fashion guests were expecting no less for the West Coast show. Arriving at the show, a giant sign reads “TommyLand” was perched high above the gates of the Venice Beach boardwalk to welcome the attendees.
Set promptly at 5 PM, the collection was shown 30 minutes late due to the arrival of celebrity guests trickling in one by one. Actors, musicians, influencers and industry heavy weights all came for the show. The biggest coup of the night was an appearance by Lady Gaga in the front row. Fresh off her impressive Super Bowl performance four days prior, the pop singer carried a bouquet of flowers to present the designer. Gaga—real name Stefani Germanotta, wore bedazzled eye make up—similar to her Super Bowl beauty look, a Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2016 sequined embroidered silk leotard, fishnets and beige suede boots. Other front row guests include Camilla Cabello, Sofia Richie, Lewis Hamilton, Kaia Gerber, Lucky Blue Smith, Martin Garrix and many more.
Gigi Hadid, who designed a second capsule collection with the brand, opened the show wearing multi colored patchwork knit crop top with a patchwork jacket along with black leather pants and boots. The outfit was a Tommy x Gigi design shown along with Hilfiger’s own collection. Hadid’s model younger sister, Bella followed suit wearing a yellow-cropped polo and multicolored patchwork mini skirt. The clothes incorporated Americana esthetic with western and west coast vibes. Knee length denim coats, fringe denim mini skirts, patchwork silk maxi dresses, American flag inspired stars and stripes t-shirts adorned the models bodies as they strutted in the tune of Tupac’s California Love. The “See Now Buy Now” collection was immediately available for purchased after the show in merchandise tents surrounding the runway. “The inspiration of the show was Southern California, “ Hilfiger shared in an interview with L.A. Guestlist. In addition, working the It model, Gigi Hadid the second time around “gets better with age.” For the must haves pieces in the collection, Hilfiger said, “you need the jean shorts, the bomber jackets, the long patchwork dresses and the patched denim.” Hilfiger’s wife, Dee Ocleppo Hilfigger was ecstatic to have the show in California. “I’m so excited. We love LA and we have three of our children live out here so it was so much fun, ” Hilfiger’s wife said.
The night did not end with only the runway show, nonetheless it being a Tommy Hilfiger production spectacle. After the designer and his model muse finished walking down the boardwalk runway, the two climbed on a live stage to present the special musical guest: Fergie. Singing her hits Fergalicious, Big Girls Don’t Cry, M.I.L.F $ and I Gotta A Feeling, the iconic singer pumped up the crowd to a whole lot of dancing and energy. Watching nearby in the VIP section, Sofia Richie and Hailey Baldwin who also walked in the show, spoke to L.A. Guestlist about the night. “It was really fun. It’s the same crazy runway and it’s my fourth show with them [the brand]. I really like the big rugby shirts. They are really cool,” Baldwin said. “It was absolutely amazing. I need the big coats for summer,” Richie joined in.
Once the music began settling down, several models rushed to the food trucks to get a bite to eat before their flight back to New York for NYFW. “I’m flying back tonight because I’m walking the La Perla show tomorrow,” said model Greta Varlese. Tommy Hilfiger and PR/ production team, KCD deserve a tremendous honor for closing down an entire boardwalk and putting together an incredibly organized and exciting production. The “TommyLand” Spring 2017 runway show “music festival” went on without a single hitch.
