LA Guestlist

Sourcing Los Angeles Culture

Our Favorite LA Events: The Week Of October 9th – 15th featuring Friday the 13th, Flying Lotus, and Much More!

Hey, we get it – Los Angeles is a big city. Not only are there endless opportunities for coffee stops, beach visits, and celebrity sightings, but the metropolis also boasts an absolutely massive catalogue of events. Even on a daily basis, the list of things to do can certainly seem a little overwhelming at times.

Somewhere, among the hazy smog that engulfs the city, lies a hotbed of culture and entertainment – you just have to sift through the haze to find what’s best. That’s why we over at LA Guestlist have done the work for you and put together the seven hottest, freshest, and most Los Angeles events we could find for you in the week of September 4th – September 10th. Something for you each and every night.

We’ll try not to break your wallet, either.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th

  • Out of the Blue – An Evening of True Stories

A monthly recurrence, this production from Spark engages the audience in true stories from seven curated storytellers. Each story reveals an intimate side from the storyteller and focuses on a true event that happened in their lives, all focused on a theme. This month’s theme is ‘Out of the Blue.’

You can still grab tickets here

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th

  • Vortex Presents: Young Frankenstein

Another monthly offering on this week’s list, the movie screenings at Vortex are a completely different animal. If you’re looking for an inviting, positive place with a warm community to have a movie screening night you won’t forget, you don’t have to look any further than right here. Vortex is a wide open space constantly rearranging and transforming itself for different art, community, and general purposes.

The show is free for all ages, doors opening at 7 with the movie beginning at 7:30. BYO pillows, blankets, beanbags, yoga mats, etc encouraged. Popcorn and soda will be available for purchase. You can check out the venue’s website for more info here

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th

  • Short Film Night @ El Cid – Female Filmmaker Edition

We’ve promoted this event in the past, and try not to double dip when it comes to shout outs due to the vast amount of LA offerings, but this really is something special. The first Wednesday of every month, come hang out at El Cid and check out various short films from a curated selection of submissions from up and coming filmmakers. The difference? Community. You’re seated at a long table with the rest of the guests, with food and drink service all night. This glowing surrounding of people puts this a notch above the other “open screen” nights(and tends to attract better films, too). This month, most importantly, they are focusing on female filmmakers. Definitely make sure you come out and show support!

The night kicks off at 8PM and costs $10 at the door.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th

  • Namkyo Presents: An Evening of Acoustic Music, Wine & Books

Namkyo, one of Los Angeles’ music-centric art communities and record labels is holding a free event in Echo Park’s Stories Books and Cafe. The show, which will feature music from Mystical Joyride, MRY and more, will encase a night of positivity and good vibes through the label’s stripped down, acoustic offerings. The best part? It’s absolutely free! The back patio at Stories is worth hanging out at anyways, so if you haven’t checked out the space, tonight may be the perfect excuse!

The event is free, and kicks off at 8 PM.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13th

  • Mr. Bones x Platform: Friday the 13th Celebration

Join Mr. Bones at the Platform for a Friday the 13th Celebration, live music from the California Feetwarmers and varity of spooky and fun activities including tarot card readers by Thumbtack, Halloween makeup touchups with NYX, and treats provided from Hayden.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th

  • Flying Lotus in 3D and Thundercat

This Saturday, enjoy an incredibly unique live musical performance from Flying Lotus, as you delve into his specially prepared audio-visual experience that will literally jump out at you (so long as you are wearing your 3D glasses). The show, which is being described as one of the most inventive and engaging concert experiences of the past decade, is also being held at the Fairbanks Lawn in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. As if you needed anything else to convince you, Thundercat will also be making an appearance to perform.

You can grab tickets here. Which we highly recommend you do now. Like, right now.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th

  • Sherman Oaks Street Fair

The perfect Sunday entails food, drink, and friends – a cap to your week and nod to the next that Sherman Oaks is offering this Sunday by shutting down nine blocks of Ventura Blvd to host their annual street fair. The fair will feature two music stages, carnival rides, car shows, plenty of food and drink, and more. The fair starts at 10 AM.
