Celebrities Raise $130K for Lupus Research at the ‘Get Lucky for Lupus’ Poker Tournament

Lupus LA threw its annual celebrity poker tournament ‘Get Lucky for Lupus’ at Avalon on September 16th, 2015. The event was hosted by Mekhi Phifer and Lupus LA ambassador Cheryl Burke. Cheryl said that she is involved with the Lupus LA charity because “it is so important to bring awareness to this disease”.

This is one of my favorite charity events of the year because people are truly dedicated to the cause. Don Cheadle participated in the poker tournament and said that he didn’t actually know how to play poker, but hey that’s why it’s for charity. The event raised over $130K for lupus research and local patient programs. Other notable attendees included Joanna Krupa, Taylor Spreitler, Danielle Milian, Sammi Stefan, Ryan Cabrera, Paul Johansson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Dondre Whitfield, Josh Altman, Shawne Merriman, Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho, Tony Denison, Travis Aaron Wade, Nick Gonzalez, and Scott Michael Campbell.

A disease with no cure, lupus affects 1.5 Million people in the US, which is more than cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis combined. Ninety percent of lupus patients are women. The Get Lucky For Lupus LA event raises funds for Lupus LA, which promotes lupus research, awareness, and education, and serves the needs of people with lupus and their families in California. In the past eleven years, the event has raised nearly $2.5 Million for the cause. To learn how you can “Get into the Loop” please click HERE

This post is dedicated to my dear friend who amazes me everyday and doesn’t let this disease stop her from living life to the fullest.
