2015 Vans US Open of Surfing Winners Hiroto Ohhara (JPN) and Johanne Defay (FRA) Claim their Trophies in Huntington Beach, CA

The perfect California summer weather ran through all week in Huntington Beach for the 2015 Vans US Open of Surfing which ended on Sunday August 2nd, 2015, with the men’s and women’s surfing finals.

Johanne Defay from France was on top of the world as she won the championship title for the women’s surfing competition, and a $100,000 check. Defay said “it’s all the work I’ve done before and it’s all come together. I’ve just been sticking to same game plan, trying to get a lot of waves. It was tricky at the start but then I got that score which put me in a better position.”

Hiroto Ohhara from Japan claimed the biggest result of his career today winning the Vans US Open of Surfing Men’s QS 10,000 after defeating Tanner Hendrickson from Hawii in a hard-fought final. The result propelled Ohhara up 68 places on the QS rankings to 13th place, putting him within reach of qualifying for the Top 34 in 2016. “I don’t know how to say it, I’m just so stoked,” said Ohhara. “It feels like something very special today.
